Shattered Spirits: The Fall of Ishcairn by Cal Black

I finished my first novella for the Speculative Fiction Indie Novella Championship Series – Shattered Spirits: The Fall of Ishcairn by Cal Black!

I had no idea what to expect when I started this novella. I had only heard great things about Cal Black’s other books, but didn’t know much about this one going in. And WOW! This book was exceptionally creepy. Really well written prose with complex characters and a story that keeps unravelling the further in you read. The setting and atmosphere really work to provide that extra creepy feel. Perfect read for this time of the year, leading into “spooky season.” This was an easy 5 star read for me.

Updating with my CAWPILE Score:
Characters – 9 – I think characters are some of the most important elements in novellas and Black creates some really really great characters in Shattered Spirits.
Atmosphere/Setting – 10 – The atmosphere in this novella is absolutely amazing. 100% Creepy. 100% perfect for this novella and story.
Writing Style – 10 – I loved everything about Cal Black’s writing style and can’t wait to read her other books.
Plot – 8.5 – I’ll be honest, the plot took kind of a back seat to the characters here but also it was there. It was strong, just not quite as strong as her characters.
Intrigue – 10 – This novella was ALL ABOUT Intrigue. And it was perfect. What was happening? Who was it happening to?
Logic/Relationships -8 – This was strong but could have been stronger.
Enjoyment – 10 – Nothing but enjoyment with this novella and can’t wait to read the rest of Cal Black’s books.
Total CAWPILE score = 65.5/7 = 9.3 = 5 Stars!
