Book Spotlight of the Month

This book was completely unique! Yes, we’ve had “deal with the devil” type books before, but we haven’t had one quite like this – if we have, I haven’t seen it! I loved everything about Ben Schnenkman’s book, My Boss is the Devil.

I loved the voice, the story, the characters. The pacing was good. Just everything was either good or great! See my CAWPILE score breakdown for more details.

Spoiler Free Summary: (Partly taken from Goodreads)

What’s better than being a college dropout twenty-something working as a barista in New Haven, CT? Just about anything.

Nick would give anything to escape the dead-end life he’s made for himself. He gets the offer of a lifetime from Lucifer himself, to trade his apron for a suit. Should he really consider becoming an agent of the Devil? With the way things are going for Nick, of course he should.

Lucifer wants to give Nick a chance to do what he always wanted, to help people, wielding power and influence to make their dreams come true. He would have to sell his soul, but the Devil is a gambling man and lets Nick experience his new life before he has to sign on the dotted line. Can he use the Devil’s power for good, and make his mark on the world, or will he fall victim to his own desires and lose his humanity?

CAWPILE Breakdown:

Characters: 8 – I loved the characters in this book. They seemed genuine, unique and relatable.

Atmosphere/Setting: 6 – The setting was fine; it felt like your basic small university town/city. I’d have liked to see more “university” in it – I’ve lived the past 7 or 8 years in University cities/towns and see how much of a change it is. I also wanted to feel more atsmophere, for a book that has the Devil as one of the MC’s there wasn’t a whole lot of atmosphere …

Writing Style: 7 – The writing style was easy to follow. Prose was good. Pacing was great. Characters were fun. It kept me engaged the whole time.

Plot: 9 – Loved how this plot progressed. I thought I knew where it was going, until I didn’t.

Intrigue: 8.5 – I was so intrigued with so much in this book. The characters, the plot, the setting. How these deals worked? How did the MC work through this? I wanted to know everything. I think all my questions were answered, mostly, by the end. I look forward to reading book 2 for more.

Logic/Relationships: 9 – I was surprised with how much this made logical sense. I enjoyed seeing where the relationships developed.

Enjoyement: 7.5 – I enjoyed My Boss is the Devil a lot and I can’t wait to read more in this series.

CAWPILE Total: 55/7 = 7.8 = 4 stars
